DJ CAREY MULTI ALL IRELAND AND ALL STAR WINNING KILKENNY HURLER WILL BE AT KEVIN LYNCH HURLING CLUB FROM 10.30AM ON SATURDAY 22ND FEBRUARY 2014. THERE WILL BE AN OPPORTUNITY TO MEET HIM AND COPIES OF HIS NEW AUTOBIOGRAPHY WILL BE ON SALE.
Born in Gowran, County Kilkenny, Carey first excelled at hurling whilst at school in St. Kieran's College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Kilkenny minor team, before later lining out with the under-21 side. He made his senior debut in the 1989-90 National Hurling League. Carey went on to play a key part for Kilkenny over the next decade and a half, and won five All-Ireland medals, ten Leinster medals and four National Hurling League medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on three occasions.
Carey's career tally of 34 goals and 195 points ranks him as Kilkenny's third highest championship scorer of all-time.
Carey's granduncle, Paddy Phelan, is regarded as one of the greatest hurlers of all-time and won four All-Ireland medals with Kilkenny. His aunt, Peggy Carey, won four All-Ireland medal with the Kilkenny camogie team. Carey's brother, Martin, was sub goalkeeper on the Kilkenny for a number of years.
Carey is widely regarded as one of the greatest hurlers in the history of the game. During his playing days he won nine All-Star awards, as well as being named Texaco Hurler of the Year on two occasions. He has been repeatedly voted onto teams made up of the sport's greats, including on the Kilkenny Hurling Team of the Century in 2000 and on a special Leinster Hurling Team (1984-2009). Carey's omission from the Hurling Team of the Millennium was seen as controversial at the time.
In retirement from playing Carey has become involved in team management and coaching. At club level he has trained the Young Irelands junior hurling team, while he has also served as hurling coach at Carlow Institute of Technology.
The minor team of this year is showing the same courage and loyalty as Paul did when he played emulating his success on the field. So get up to Kevin Lynch Park on Friday night to show your support and hopefully the minors can reclaim this cup for another year and push on to the same success Paul enjoyed in his playing days.
The Paul Gillen Cup will take place this Friday night 7.30pm at Kevin Lynch Park.Paul lined out in the corner back position that day just 15 years of age and is fondly remembered for his hurling skills and comradeship by his fellow team mates and club members.
The game will be against Shane O'Neills and will also be a competitive Antrim league match which the minors have been participating in this year. All support will be welcome in this first match at Kevin Lynch Park for the minors after winning county title on Saturday past.
This match is always an important date in the Kevin Lynch Hurling Club calendar but maybe a little bit more so this year as Paul was a member of the last minor team to win the county title back in 2001.
The 2001 minor side repeated the success of the 2000 side and claimed the county minor title with a win over Slaughtneil. The side once again progressed through the Ulster Championship with a quarter final win over Keady of Armagh, then they gained revenge over Ballygalet in the semi final to set up a final clash with St Gall's of Antrim.
